On 24 November 2023, H.E. Carmen Buttigieg presented her Letters of Credence as non-resident Ambassador of the Republic of Malta to H.E. Maia Sandu, President of the Republic of Moldova. The credentials ceremony took place at the Presidential Palace in Chișinău, the Moldovan capital.

Following the ceremony, a brief yet engaging meeting was held between President Sandu and Ambassador Buttigieg, recalling the excellent diplomatic ties between Malta and Moldova. In this spirit, President Sandu stated her country’s confidence in advancing the existing productive relationship with Malta through existing and new opportunities for deeper bilateral collaboration. Furthermore, President Sandu and Ambassador Buttigieg recalled Malta’s steadfast support for Moldova’s EU membership application, notably in terms of the complex reform process that the country is undergoing through Moldova’s own-merits approach. President Sandu and Ambassador Buttigieg also touched upon Russia’s war of aggression in Ukraine, with President Sandu thanking EU Member States such as Malta for assisting both Ukrainian and Moldovan peoples to ensure peace, security and stability in Ukraine, Eastern Europe and the rest of the European continent.

The Presentation of Credentials of H.E. Carmen Buttigieg was succeeded by a meeting with Mr Sergiu Mihov, Head of the Bilateral Cooperation Directorate, and Mr Igor Rabii, Head of the Political Cooperation Section with the EU (SCPUE), at the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and European Integration (MFAEI). Throughout the meeting, the two sides reiterated the excellent bilateral relations shared between the Republic of Malta and the Republic of Moldova, whilst discussing further cooperation prospects towards strengthening bilateral ties in areas of shared interest. Besides, the two sides discussed EU-Moldova relations – with the Maltese delegation re-confirming Malta’s unwavering endorsement to Moldova’s EU membership application – as based upon the country’s own-merits approach to its current reform process.

During the Maltese delegation’s visit to Chișinău, H.E. Carmen Buttigieg was accompanied by Mr Samuel Bezzina, First Secretary at the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade.
