On Tuesday 7th June 2022, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, Mr Christopher Cutajar visited the Mexican capital, Mexico City. This visit was a continuation of the Ministry’s visit in Latin America and the Caribbean Region.
Mr Cutajar met with his Mexican counterpart, Ambassador Carmen Moreno, Undersecretary of Foreign Affairs of the United Mexican States. This was the first meeting within the framework of the Memorandum of Understanding on Political Consultations, which was signed by the two countries in December 2021. During this meeting, discussions were held on ways to enhance bilateral relations between the two countries, with a focus on economic and trade matters. During the meeting, Mr Cutajar emphasised on the need to finalise pending bilateral agreements between the two countries to take bilateral relations to the next level.
In view of the international developments, including the food and energy crisis, regional matters and cooperation in multilateral fora were also discussed. Mr Cutajar acknowledged the potential that Mexico and the region has to offer, noting that Malta will continue to serve as an advocate in favour of increased trade ties between the European Union and Mexico. In view of Thursday’s upcoming United Nations Security Council (UNSC) election, which Malta will be contesting to secure a non-permanent seat on the Council for the term 2023-2024, Mr Cutajar put forward Malta’s agenda. The UNSC was further discussed in light of Mexico’s seat on the Council for the period 2021-2022.
Following the opening of Malta’s embassy in Brazil last week, Mr Cutajar reiterated Malta’s commitment to strengthen relations with this region of the world and for Malta to serve as an active partner among the group of Latin American and Caribbean States.
