On the 19th of April 2023, H.E. Dr. Godfrey C. Xuereb presented his credentials as the 14th Maltese Ambassador to the United States to H.E. Joe Biden, President of the United States of America.
During a brief encounter at the Oval Office in the White House, President Biden and Ambassador Xuereb exchanged brief comments where the newly appointed Ambassador highlighted the strong relations the two countries have always enjoyed and the crucial role that Malta played in a number of historic international events under a number of U.S. Presidencies. The Ambassador also stressed that Malta is committed to advocating in favour of effective dialogue and multilateral efforts. Nonetheless as a result of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, the international rules-based order and global security have been compromised. While Malta continues to uphold its neutral status, the country cannot and will not stand idle when international law and principles are violated. He also made reference to the debate Malta hosted at the UN Security Council on the “Maintenance of International Peace and Security of Ukraine”, chaired bythe Hon. Dr. Ian Borg, Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade, and which also had the honour of welcoming the Hon. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.
While welcoming the new Ambassador to the United States of America the President highlighted the close friendship that exists between the two nations and stated that both are committed to democratic values, trade and global security. He emphasized that both countries share interests of promoting good governance, respect for human rights and regional peace and stability. Malta’s seat on the UN Security Council presents yet another opportunity through which the two countries can advance their partnership and mutual interests. Finally, President Biden also stated that he looked forward to collaborating with Malta to promote peace, stability and prosperity in the Mediterranean and beyond.
