“Malta and the European Union will continue to collaborate together in order for justice to prevail also through the sanctions imposed against Russia.” This was said during a bilateral meeting between the Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade Ian Borg and the European Commissioner for Justice Didier Reynders.

During this bilateral meeting, held during the European Commissioner’s official visit to Malta, the Maltese delegation had the opportunity to explain the work being done by Malta, together with its European partners through the sanctions being imposed by the European Union on Russian citizens and businesses, as part of the packages agreed to mitigate the Russian economy in light of the Russian Federation invasion on Ukraine.

Also present at this meeting was the Chairman of the Malta Sanctions Board and the Director General of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Neville Aquilina, where he was able to give more detail about the work being done in this sector, aslo with the aim of having the Maltese Government giving its share as well.

During this meeting, the many strong reforms that the Government has been making since 2019 to strengthen the rule of law and democracy in our country continued to be discussed.

From his end, the European Commissioner Reynders reiterated that he, together with his Cabinet and Directorate, look forward to continue this ongoing discussion, as they have done in recent years, for further improvement. He noted the positive steps taken with regards to the sanctions and even thanked Malta for the important work done in collaboration with European institutions and Member States.

Present for this meeting were also the Permanent Secretary Christopher Cutajar, the Head of the Secretariat Marco Micallef and the Director General Leandro Borg.
