During Monday 13th March 2023, Minister for
Foreign and European Affairs and Trade Ian Borg attended the commemoration of
the Commonwealth Day which is being celebrated in London, the United Kingdom.
Minister Ian Borg was invited by the Royal Family to attend these celebrations
on behalf of the Government of Malta. This year’s Commonwealth Day marks the 10th
anniversary since the Late Queen Elizabeth II had signed the Commonwealth
Charter back in 2013.
Minister Borg was present for the Commonwealth flag
raising ceremony at the Palace of Westminster, in which Malta’s flag was also
symbolically raised as one of the 56 states that are part of the Commonwealth
group. Later, together with High Commissioner of Malta Emmanuel Mallia, he
participated in a wreath laying ceremony at the Commonwealth Memorial Gates.
Together with a number of other Foreign Affairs Ministers,
Minister Ian Borg also attended the Commonwealth Day Service event at
Westminster Abbey and also an activity at Buckingham Palace.
Minister Borg reiterated how Malta is committed to
continue being an active state in the Commonwealth, and looks forward to the important meetings scheduled
in the coming days related to this year’s theme of a future of peace and sustainability.
