On the anniversary which marks the beginning of the
aggression by the Russian Federation on the Ukrainian territory, Minister Ian
Borg presided over the United Nations Security Council during a presentation by
the Secretary General of the United Nations António Guterres on peace and
security in Ukraine.
During his intervention, the Minister for Foreign and
European Affairs and Trade Ian Borg claimed that just and lasting peace is the
only solution to this conflict and therefore Malta will remain committed to be
a voice about the consequences that are being created by the Russian
aggression.
Minister Borg explained how
this aggression is a blatant violation of international laws and the principles
of the United Nations. He continued by reminding how it is essential that there
is accountability for the violation of these principles, including justice for
the victims of these atrocities.
During this debate, which was addressed by all member
states of the Security Council as well as a number of other member states of
the United Nations, Minister Ian Borg once again reiterated the support of the Maltese Government for
the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and claimed
that as a country that believes in multilateralism, it is our duty to continue
to defend and promote these principles and values of the UN Charter.
