The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade attended the Informal Foreign Ministers Meeting (Gymnich) that took place in Prague on 30-31 August 2022.

The first session on 30 August focussed on the EU’s relations with Africa following the EU-AU Summit, as well as the impacts of the Russian aggression against Ukraine on the African continent, particularly on grain shipments, as well as the countering of Russian disinformation in the region.

In the second session on 31 August, Ministers had the opportunity to hold a discussion on the wider implications of Russia’s aggression against Ukraine. The discussion focussed on current and future challenges in managing relations with Russia, ensuring continued EU’s unity as well as further actions to curb Russia’s ability to sustain its efforts in Ukraine. In light of Russia’s continued aggression in Ukraine Ministers also agreed to begin the process to fully suspend the Visa Facilitation Agreement with Russia.

Finally, there was a lunch meeting with the Foreign Ministers of Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova to discuss their future EU aspirations, their current needs in the context of the geopolitical reality in the area, as well as the future of the Eastern Partnership.
