To celebrate the International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia IDAHOBIT, and the LGBTIQ Pride Month, the Permanent Representations of Malta and Luxembourg to the Council of Europe, co-sponsored a debate entitled “Over the rainbow? LGBTI rights in Europe: Between reality and ambition” at European Parliamentary Association, in Strasbourg, on 7 June 2022.

The event featured an introductory video address by Ms Helena Dalli, European Commissioner for Equality, and brought together two high-level EU speakers: H.E Ms Stella Ronner, EU Ambassador for Gender and Diversity, and Mr Marc Angel, MEP & Co-Chair of the European Parliament LGBTI Intergroup.

The conference offered a high-quality discussion on the most pressing issues when it comes to LGBTI rights in the EU; discussed the Council of Europe and the European Parliament’s role in this area; explored the ways and means of how the EU and the Council of Europe can join forces to counter homophobic legislations; as well as analysed the EU priorities when it comes to promoting LGBTI rights internationally.

Malta remains committed in promoting the diversity, inclusion and equal rights for all LGBTIQ+ people, as demonstrated by the recently published ILGA Rainbow Map which indicated that for the seventh year in a row, we continue to occupy the number one spot on LBGTI equality laws and policies, with a score of 92%.
