H.E Ambassador Lorenzo Vella,
Permanent Representative of Malta to the Council of Europe, was unanimously
appointed as Chair of the Executive Committee of the North-South Centre (NSC) -
an instrument for multilateral cooperation of the Council of Europe’s policy
towards its neighbouring regions – on Friday, 17 June 2022.
Malta has along the years proved
to be a reliable partner in bridging the gap between Europe and Northern
Africa. Our strategic location at the heart of the Mediterranean, allows us to relate
to both continents, making us well suited for promoting dialogue, creating
partnership, and fostering solidarity.
As one of its founding members, our
policy has been in line with the North-South Centre’s objective of facilitating
democratic political transition, promoting good governance, reinforcing and
enlarging the Council of Europe’s regional action in combating trans-border and
global threats. In promoting this objective, the Centre has held an active role
in empowering youth and women through intercultural dialogue and global
education in member states, and in the neighbouring regions.
Throughout its Chairmanship, and for the coming
two years, Malta will continue the excellent work carried forward by H.E
Ambassador Manuel Montobbio, Permanent Representative of Spain to the Council
of Europe, and will seek to further advance the objectives and priorities of
the North-South Centre.
