The European Day of Languages has been celebrated every year since 2001 on 26 September.

To mark this day, on 26 and 27 September representatives of the Embassy of Malta in Germany introduced school children in Berlin to different aspects of Malta and the Maltese language. The motto for this year's European Day of Languages was ‘Valuing all languages in Europe’.

Rose-Ann Buhagiar, Second Secretary at the Embassy of Malta, and Christiane Nalpantidis, Consular Officer, met first and fifth graders from the Berlin districts of Wilmersdorf and Kladow. After introducing the children to some geographical, historical, and day-to-day facts about Malta, short music videos were shown in Maltese to help the students familiarise themselves with the sound of the language. Ms Buhagiar introduced them to different topics related to Malta, includingBajjiet Maltin’, ‘Festi Maltin’, ‘Ikel Malti’, and a ‘Leġġenda Maltija’. Words were quickly grasped by the students who were encouraged to find similarities to other languages they are already familiar with. The fifth grade students then posed several questions about Malta’s history and daily life.

The children were awarded a personalised diploma, confirming their participation in the ‘Malti’ crash course in recognition of their attendance and enthusiasm.

The language courses for Berlin school children, which have become an annual tradition, are organised in cooperation with the Association of European National Institutes of Culture (EUNIC), the Representation of the European Commission in Berlin and the central and state libraries of Berlin.
