Minister Vella meets the President of the Shoura Council and a Parliamentary Delegation from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia

Earlier today, Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr George W. Vella, received President of the Shoura Council Dr Abdullah Mohammed Al Sheikh, who was accompanied by a Parliamentary Delegation from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The delegation forms part of the Malta-Saudi Arabia Parliamentary Friendship Group which is currently on an official visit to Malta.

During the meeting, Minister Vella underscored the clear benefits of parliamentary diplomacy and noted that contacts between parliaments help to share experiences, to foster understanding and to formulate different opinions. Moreover, the two sides referred to the longstanding relations between the two countries and reiterated their commitment to continue working closely to further cement relations. Particular reference was made to the need to develop cooperation in areas such as education, energy and to promote people to people contacts.   

The Minister also underlined the shared will to address common challenges that have threatened stability in the Mediterranean such as radicalisation, migration and regional crises. In this regard, Minister Vella spoke of the importance that Malta attaches to improved EU-Gulf Cooperation Council relations and identified closer relations between the EU and its Southern partners as one of the priorities that will feature high on the Malta EU Presidency agenda.

The Saudi Parliamentary delegation expressed its satisfaction at the fruitful meetings held in Malta and conveyed a message of commitment to the strengthening of relations with Malta. The need to follow-up on the implementation of agreements was also emphasised. The President of the Shoura Council also recognised Malta’s valuable role as a Mediterranean and European partner which shares many similarities with the Arab world.
