Maltese Passport Applications

Applying for a new Maltese Passport / Passport renewal:

  • Unless you have an urgent query, it is advisable to send your request for an appointment to passports.london@gov.mt

 

  • In your email request it is essential to include the following information:

 

1.       Your full name

2.       Date of birth and place of birth

3.       Date and Place of Marriage (if applicable)

4.       It is required to specify the Citizenships you currently hold

5.       Your current passport number and / or Maltese ID Card Number

(Kindly note that a Maltese Identity Card can only be renewed in Malta)

6.       Your contact details (Telephone/Mobile/Email)

 

 

  • Maltese Passports can be applied for at the Malta High Commission. All Maltese Passports are issued in Malta and therefore passports cannot be issued within 24 hours. The minimum processing time is two weeks. This timeframe varies depending on your individual case. It is strongly advisable to always ensure that your Maltese Passport is valid, and you book your appointment well in advance. You may consider having six months of remaining validity on your passport at all times especially if your Maltese Passport is your only form of identification and you are reliant on this passport for your residency outside of Malta.

 

 

  • Additional documentation may be requested by the Passport officers if deemed necessary for your application.

 

 

 


Fees applicable

 

  • Applicants must pay the applicable fees during their appointment.  At the Malta High Commission payments are accepted in cash, cheque or by card.

  • Between April to August, a peak season fee applies for adult passports (16+ years). A low season fee applies when applying for an adult passport during the remaining months.

  • An additional fee will be charged if you wish to avail yourself of the postal delivery service for your new Maltese Passport.

  • An additional fee will be charged if you have a lost or stolen passport and need to take an Oath confirming this.

Passport Renewal for Minors (0-17 years of age)


Form A still needs to be completed in case of minors’ applications. Children under the age of five (5) years need a recommender to complete sections 6 and 7. The recommender must also witness both parents’ signatures. The parent/guardian is required to present two (2) identical passport photos and one (1) of the photos must be endorsed at the back by the same recommender. The recommender needs to write on the back of one of the passport size photos: I certify that this is a true likeness of Mr / Miss _____ . The children (only if under the age of 5 years) is not required to visit the Malta High Commission.


Minors between six (6) and seventeen (17) years also need a recommender to fill in sections 6 and 7. The recommender must also witness both parents’ signatures. The parent/guardian needs to present one (1) passport photo which should be signed at the back and endorsed by the same recommender.  The recommender needs to endorse the back of one of the passport size photos: I certify that this is a true likeness of Mr / Miss _____ .  Minors must personally call at the Malta High Commission to have their live facial biometrics captured. Both parents’ original Passports need to be presented and one of the parents needs to ­ accompany the minor. Minors aged twelve (12) years and over will also have their fingerprints captured.


A recommender is a professional person who has known you for at least two years. It is important that the recommender uses his/her business stamp for this section. In case that a stamp is not possible, a business card or a business letterhead will be sufficient.  The recommender can be a person who holds a University Degree and who has known you for more than 2 years (not a family member).  S/he must be from any Commonwealth country.

Replacing a Lost or Stolen Passport


In the case of a lost or stolen passport, the holder is required to first complete a Police report. The applicant would also be required to complete an oath during the scheduled appointment at the Malta High Commission.  Form A application needs to be fully completed ahead of the appointment. It is important that the recommender’s section is completed and presented along with the police report and one valid form of Identification. All applicants are required to pay the applicable fees.


Applicants must complete Form A (section 1, 2, 4, 5, 7 and 8 needs to be filled in) and attend the Malta High Commission in person to have their facial biometric image and fingerprints captured. A recommender is a professional person who has known you for at least two years. It is important that the recommender uses his/her business stamp for this section. In case that a stamp is not possible, a business card or a business letterhead will be sufficient.  The recommender can be a person who holds a University Degree and who has known you for more than 2 years (not a family member).  S/he must be from any Commonwealth country. 


Applicants need to present a total of tw​o passport size photos, one (1) passport photo which should be signed at the back and endorsed by the same recommender.  The recommender needs to endorse the back of one of the passport size photos: I certify that this is a true likeness of Mr / Ms _____ .


 

Applicants unable to call in person


Applicants unable to call in person at the Malta High Commission due to severe medical/health reasons must contact us to discuss this on passports.london@gov.mt or call us on 0 207 292 4800 for further guidance.

 


First time Passports for applicants who have recently acquired Maltese Citizenship


Anyone who acquired Maltese citizenship by registration, naturalisation or has dual citizenship, applying for a Maltese Passport for the first time is requested to book an appointment at the Malta High Commission. Application Form A is required and must be completed ahead of your scheduled appointment. During your appointment, it is important to present Form A completed (including the recommender’s section), a valid form of photographic identification document which bears both your photo and signature and which is issued by the competent authorities as well as the Maltese Citizenship Certificate or Dual Confirmation letter issued by the Maltese Authorities.

Life Events Registrations applications such as births, marriages and divorces can be submitted during your passport application as advised by the passport officer. Please note that walk-ins are not accepted.


Appointments are booked by submitting the applicant’s details and contact details (as highlighted at the top of the page) along with a scan of the Citizenship Certificate or Dual Confirmation letter on passports.london@gov.mt
